    Only so many hours!

We all know there are only so many hours in a day, yet so many of us continue to try and squeeze and push as much into that day as we possibly can.

Despite all modern advances and progress the 24-hour cycle is finite, it’s all that’s available. In addition, for at least 6.5 – 9 of those hours, we should be asleep; to rest and repair internal resources for the following day.

The remaining awake hours tend to be packed with work, family, social and health activities. There is very little space to just sit and do nothing. However, what is most fascinating is that when we want to start something new, like a hobby or an exercise regime, or even when we agree to take on additional work, to cover for someone else and/or alleviate their workload, we very rarely consider what needs to come out of our schedule to accommodate what we are adding in.

We just shove it in as best we can.

It’s like knowing we are a dress size 14 yet insisting we wear size 8 and then complaining that we are bursting out of every seam or just sucking it up while feeling dreadful.

It is no wonder we get stressed, tired and tetchy. What is it that drives us to do that? Is it because we’ve not identified our boundaries and are just unaware? Or, maybe we do understand our boundaries but are reluctant to communicate them for fear of conflict.

Or are we just so keen to please everyone else that we eliminate all care for ourselves in the process?

Before taking on anything else, it’s always helpful to reflect on how ‘full’ we already are. It may be necessary to consider what must first come out to open up space. If the answer is ‘nothing’, then maybe there’s a need to reconsider what we want to do, or are being asked to do.

Otherwise, there does come a point where we’re so exhausted and anxious that we can’t face any activities that make up our waking hours.

    A lonely place to land.

Stay Well to Perform Well 🙂
