Leadership has become so much more than an extension of General Management. It is now forming as a discipline in its own right, where an understanding of behaviour, mindset and emotion is as critical to success (if not more so) as technical and specialist skills. It means extending capabilities and growing into often unfamiliar and uncomfortable spaces, such as empathy, vulnerability and emotional regulation. It is not an easy journey and research suggests that, for many aspiring leaders, there is still a long way to go. However, for those willing to learn, unlearn and relearn, the rewards are many.
